When I was little, one of my favourite books (apart from Harry Potter, of course) was Richard Scarry's Great Big Air Book. It explained something invisible and intangible in amazing ways, with charming illustrations that gave me a real understanding of how birds magically float in the sky and the many astounding things that air makes possible.
Later on, in uni, I was asked to create an illustration of an aspect of history, using one colour - maybe two. So of course I chose flight. The resulting illustration was created digitally in the style of a lino-cut and then printed using a photocopy transfer technique to give the illusion of a hand-cut lino print.
Details include references to some of my favourite stories from the history of flight:
From Icarus' fall to Da Vinci;
The Wright brothers to the Jumbo jet...
...to the final frontier.
